Generic Name : AMPICILLIN

ABSTRACT –

Ampicillin is derivative of penicillin and is an antibiotic. It is used in treating several bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, meningitis, endocarditis and salmonellosis. It is also used in prevention of group B streptococcal infection in new born infants. It belongs to penicillin class of drugs.

DOSAGE –

  • Ampicillin has to be taken as directed by the doctors.
  • Prescribed dosage:

Capsule: 250mg, 500mg

Oral solution: 125mg/5ml, 250mg/5 ml

Injection powdered form: 125mg, 250mg, 500mg, 1g, 2g and 10g

SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Rashes
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Tiredness

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Angioedema
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Colitis
  • Seizures
  • Serum sickness

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS:

  • The patient may deal with certain gastrointestinal issues like hairy tongue.

LONG-TERM EFFECTS:

  • Treatment for long term leads to glomerulonephritis.
  • Mild hepatitis and Meningitis may also develop which can get severe.

DRUG INTERACTIONS –

  • Gentamicin
  • Azithromycin
  • Acetaminophen
  • Paracetamol
  • Ibuprofen
  • Advil

MILD INTERACTIONS OF AMPICILLIN ARE:

  • Benadryl
  • Colace
  • Cefotaxime
  • Trimethoprim
  • Zofran

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Take an allergy test.
  • Do not skip doses.
  • Stay hydrated in case of diarrhea.
  • Rush to doctor immediately if there is an observation of bloody stool.

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION WITH AMPICILLIN:

  • Consult doctor before breastfeeding the child.
  • Administering of drug during pregnancy is safe with consultation.

WARNINGS –

  • Do not stop the drug abruptly.
  • Consult doctor in case the rashes stay for long time.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
  • Rush to doctor immediately if there is an observation of bloody stool.
