Generic Name : BACLOFEN

ABSTRACT –

Baclofen is a muscle relaxant that is generally used to treat muscle problems – like spasms, twitching, and muscle spasticity. It is also used in the treatment of alcohol dependency. It is an antispasmodic agent that is used to treat motor problems associated with the muscle caused by conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy or other spinal cord disorders. It performs functions similar to the Gamma-Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) hormone to relax activity in the nerves so as to reduce muscle pain. It is either administered orally or intrathecally (directly at the spinal cord). Baclofen falls under the category of drugs called ‘skeletal muscle relaxants’.

DOSAGE –

  • Follow the doctor’s instructions strictly with regards to administering this drug.
  • Intensity of this drug to be administered differs depending on the condition and severity of the muscle pain.

  • Tablet – 10mg, 20mg
    Oral solution – 0.05mg/mL, 2mg/mL, 5mg/mL

  • Drowsiness

RARE SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Bloody or darkly-colored urine
  • Episodes of fainting
  • Hallucinations

  • Ringing in the ears

Baclofen has moderate interactions with at least 635 different drugs.

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Notify the doctor of patient’s detailed and accurate medical history before drug prescription. In case of pre-existing conditions like kidney disease, ulcers, seizure conditions, diabetes or hypertension.
  • Avoid Baclofen in case of allergic reactions.
  • Do not administer Baclofen for individuals under the age of 12.
  • Avoid alcohol while on course with Baclofen.
  • Do not engage in complicated tasks while on course with Baclofen – tasks such as driving, lifting heavy weights, operating machinery, etc.

WARNINGS –

  • Baclofen can increase chance of ovarian cysts in women. Consult your doctor to keep your health regulated while on course.
  • Baclofen can cause delayed reaction time. Be cautious while on course – especially when dealing with regular tasks that may injure patient.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately. Symptoms of overdose include extreme nausea, weak or heavy breathing, seizures, severe rashes or swelling of facial areas.
