Generic Name : HALOPERIDOL

 

ABSTRACT –

Haloperidol is antipsychotic agent that is used to treat schizophrenia and control motor / speech tics in individuals suffering from Tourette’s syndrome. Haloperidol drug works by altering chemical levels in the brain that are responsible for this disorder / syndrome.

DOSAGE –

  • Haloperidol is to be taken as directed by the doctors. Consume this drug only as prescribed to avoid overdose or other harmful effects.
  • This drug can be consumed with / without food.
  • Follow prescription strictly so as not to overdose.
  • Keep using this drug for weeks on end to observe effective result. Do not stop taking this drug all of a sudden.
  • General Adult Dosage available:
    Oral – 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg, 5mg, 10mg

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Provide the doctor with a detailed and accurate medical history prior to drug prescription. Notify especially in case of illnesses and conditions such as kidney / liver disease, heart conditions, thyroid disorders, seizure disorders, long QT syndrome or electrolyte imbalance. Haloperidol is not approved for use in case of conditions such as dementia.
  • Do not use this drug in case of an allergy to Haloperidol itself or in case of conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or any condition that badly affects the central nervous system.
  • Inform the doctor of all the drugs being consumed so as to avoid severe drug interactions. Notify especially in case of the use of blood thinners such as warfarin, antidepressants, anti-malaria medication, cancer medication or drugs for arrhythmia.
  • This drug can harm a baby severely during the last trimester of pregnancy. Avoid using this drug during this time, but do not stop consuming this drug if course has begun – unless a doctor has approved of this action.
  • This drug can pass through breast milk and harm a feeding newborn.
  • Avoid alcohol while on drug course.

WARNINGS –

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • This drug can impair thinking and reaction time – therefore, it is advised to avoid engaging in activities that may potentially lead to injuries.
  • In case of overdose that may be fatal, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
