Abilify is an anti-psychotic drug used to treat psychotic disorders like manic depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is also used with other drugs to treat mental disorders and major depressive disorders in individuals above the age of 18. It is also used for children who endure Tourette’s syndrome or show symptoms of mild to moderate autism such as self-harm and/or irritability. This drug works by manipulating the chemicals of the brain in advantage of recovery from various psychotic disorders. Abilify belongs to a class of medications called ‘atypical anti-psychotics’.


    • Abilify has to be taken as directed by the doctors.
    • Tablet form is to be swallowed whole without being crushed or chewed.
    • In case of orally disintegrating tablets,
    • Adult – consumption for bipolar disorder is – 15mg/d – 30mg/day

    • Adult – consumption for MDD is 2-5mg/day

    • Child – consumption for bipolar disorder is – 2mg/day with steady increase in dosage (to achieve total dosage of 10mg) per day.

    • Child – consumption for symptoms of autistic disorder – 5mg/day with steady increase in dosage (to achieve total dosage of 15mg) per day.


Diagnosis is usually recommended to –

  • Weight gain
  • Symptoms of cold– sneezing, runny nose.
  • Symptoms of cold– sneezing, runny nose.
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety or restlessness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Blurry Vision
(These symptoms may prove an allergic reaction to the drug.)
  • Akathisia
  • Swelling on the face
  • Shortness of breath
  • Seizures
  • Constipation
  • Depressing/ suicidal thoughts
  • Symptoms that signify high blood sugar levels
  • Symptoms that signify low blood cell counts
  • Fever, tremors and severe nervous system reactions


  • Benzodiazepine
  • Carbamazepine
  • Fluoxetine
  • Itraconazole
  • Acetaminophen / pentazocine
  • Droperidol
  • Dezocine
  • Fentanyl
  • Hydrocodone
  • Hydromorphone
  • Propoxyphene
  • Tapentadol
  • Abilify has major drug interactions with at least 140 different drugs, moderate drug interactions with 10-14 drugs, hence must be administered with care


  • It is not known whether Abilify causes risk for pregnant women, but is acceptable in case the potential benefit outweighs potential risk.
  • It is important to be regularly hydrated while on a course with Abilify – overheating and dehydration must always be avoided.
  • Quick movements like getting up too fast while on course, should be avoided.


  • Alcohol can cause increase in side effects during the course of Abilify, and hence, it is recommended against consuming the same.
  • Administer Abilify with caution for patients with heart diseases, kidney diseases, strokes and seizures – since it can affect the blood cell count as well as blood sugar levels.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
