ABSTRACT –

Aleve is a temporary pain reliever used to treat minor aches due to arthritis, menstrual cramps, headaches, toothaches and fever as well. It is also used to treat certain other illnesses such as rheumatoid or osteoarthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, Paget’s Disease of Bone and even Bartter’s Syndrome. It works by reducing the levels of a hormone called prostaglandins that are responsible for fevers, pains, aches and inflammation. Aleve is classified as an NSAID (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug), and is popularly used to treat minor aches and muscular pains.

DOSAGE –

• Aleve is to be taken as directed by the doctors.
• Aleve tablet is to be swallowed whole.
• General Adult dosage –
Tablet – 250 mg, 500mg For Arthritis – each dosage twice a day For Gout – every 6-8 hours as needed to alleviate pain

SIDE EFFECTS –

• Headache
• Itching or rashes
• Patches on the skin
• Stomach pains
• Congestion
• Pain in the chest area

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

• Back pain
• Leg pain
• Bleeding gums
• Ulcers or canker sores
• Bluing of lips or fingernails
• Severe congestion or discomfort
• Coma
• Dizziness or confusion
• Slurred speech
• Loss of vision
• Rapid weight gain
• Burning in the eyes
• Painful red lumps forming
• Pounding in the ears

PRECAUTIONS –

• Provide your doctor with a detailed and accurate medical history before drug prescription. Notify your doctor beforehand of illnesses, especially in case of – heart diseases, diabetes, stroke, asthmatic conditions, stomach ulcers, intestinal bleeding, liver disease, kidney disease or fluid retention.
• Do not use Aleve in case of an allergy towards NSAIDs (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs)
• Aleve can make patient sensitive to sunlight and heat. Wear protective clothing or apply sunscreen when outdoors on drug course.
• Avoid using Aleve just before or after a heart bypass surgery.
• Co-operate with frequent medical examinations that may be required during drug course, to ensure regular health or variation.
• Avoid alcohol while on course.
• Avoid aspirin while on course.
• Aleve is not recommended in the last three months of pregnancy, as it may pose risks to the unborn child. Consult a doctor regarding the use of this drug during pregnancy.
• Aleve can transfer into breast milk while feeding. Avoid breastfeeding while on drug course.

WARNINGS –

• Aleve can aggravate intestinal bleeding, especially in older adults. Consult a doctor immediately in case of severe abdominal pains.
• Aleve can lead to high risk of heart attacks or strokes, even in patients that do not have pre-existing conditions that may be cause for concern
• Some patients may be allergic to NSAIDs. An allergic reaction to Aleve can include difficulty in breathing, rashes, itching and swelling of facial areas and/or hives. Contact a medical authority immediately on observing these symptoms.
• Naproxen is not recommended for children below the age of 2. Keep this drug out of reach of children.
• In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
