SORE THROAT

ABSTRACT -

Sore throat is a condition which causes pain and irritation in the throat. It is also known as Pharyngitis in medical terms. The pain usually worsens when a person tries to swallow anything. It’s a very common condition which can get cured with some effective home remedies but it is recommended to seek a medical consultation and treatment if it gets severe.

CAUSES -

  • Viral infections like cold, flu, measles or whooping cough
  • Allergies and pollutants
  • Dryness in throat
  • Pre-existing conditions such as HIV infections, Cancerous tumor or GERD
  • Muscle strain
  • Bacterial infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes like strep throat

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –

  • Severe pain in throat
  • Difficulty in swallowing and talking
  • Change in voice and pitch
  • Swelling in throat glands
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Cough and sneezing

DIAGNOSIS –

  • Physical examination
  • Throat swab testing

TREATMENT –

  • Antibiotics
  • Mild pain relievers
  • OTC Medications

RISK FACTORS –

  • Pollution and irritants in the surroundings
  • Tobacco abuse
  • Sinus infection
  • Weakened immunity

PREVENTION –

  • Wash hands properly to keep away the germs and bacteria
  • Avoid sharing utensils and glasses
  • Try to stay away and avoid close interaction with infected patient
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the house and surroundings
  • Quit smoking
  • Use hand sanitizers

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • Estimation shows that the prevalence rate for sore throat is 100 per 1000 people annually.
  • 54% of the patients get cured with the use of antibiotics.
