SPINAL CORD INJURY
The spinal cord is situated in the vertebral foramen and made up of 33 segments. There are 12 thoracic, 7 cervical, 5 sacral, 5 lumbar, and 4 coccyges segments. It performs two prime functions - connects the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and body to the brain and receives information from the sensory organs and transmits it to the brain. When the spinal cord doesn’t function properly, the symptoms like Numbness, Weakness, tingling sensation, and extreme back pain arises. According to US statistics, every year there are 17,500 people meeting with some spinal cord injury. It means that every day there are approximately 48 injuries which might be due to bike accidents, fall from heights and sports-related accidents. It is also stated that men are mostly affected by some form of spinal cord injury and dysfunctioning. Medications like Intravenous (IV) methylprednisolone surgeries and proper rehabilitation may be given according to the prognosis of the problem.
