Generic Name : BUDESONIDE (ORAL/NASAL)

ABSTRACT –

Budesonide is a steroid drug, classified as a ‘Glucocorticoids Inhaled corticosteroid’ to treat moderately intense Crohn’s disease. It works by controlling inflammation at the cellular level. The nasal form of this drug is used as a preventive measure to avoid the re-growth of polyps in the nose after removal surgery. It is also used to treat nasal symptoms of seasonal allergies.

DOSAGE –

  • Budesonide is to be taken as directed by the doctors. Intensity and strength may vary depending on condition and severity.
  • The oral tablet/capsule is to be swallowed whole with a whole glass of water.
  • The nasal inhalation is to be sprayed four times in each nostril for adults, and twice in each nostril for children.
  • General Adult Dosage available:
  • Oral tablet – 3mg, 9mg
    Nasal spray – 1mg/2mL, 200mcg/inh, 90mcg/inh

  • Sore throat
  • Sores in the nose
  • White patches in or around the nose
  • Swellings in the nose

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Severe nosebleeds
  • Sore-throat
  • Severe fever
  • Nasal irritation
  • Difficulties in vision
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cold symptoms

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Provide a detailed and accurate medical history before drug prescription. Notify especially in case of – an allergy to the drug, tuberculosis, any kind of infection, a weak immune system, high blood pressure, liver problems, stomach ulcers, osteoporosis, stomach ulcers, eczema or diabetes.
  • Long term use of this drug requires frequent medical tests to ensure regular functioning of immune system.
  • Prime the nasal spray before first use by spraying it 8 eight times away from the face, and blow your nose before each use.
  • Dispose of the nasal spray after 120 sprays.
  • Do not breast feed while on drug course, as it may cause harm to either the baby or the mother.
  • In case of pregnancy while on drug course, notify the doctor of the condition and health of the newborn or fetus.
  • Grapefruit may react with this drug. Try to avoid it while on drug course.

WARNINGS –

  • Do not use the nasal spray over one time per day.
  • Budesonide weakens the immune system and makes it more likely to contract or catch disease. Keep patient safe and away from infections while on drug course, and notify immediately in case of changes in regular health.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Budesonide is not recommended for children under the age of 18.
  • In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
