Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease among men and women caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia Trachomatis. As the symptoms of this infection are not easy to detect, it spreads and affects sexual partners very easily. The treatment is not difficult but, if it is left untreated it can lead to serious health issues.
CAUSES –
Unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with infected individual.
Air droplets coming after coughing or sneezing
Avoid using infected individual’s commode
Don’t share sauna and swimming pool with infected people
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
Abdominal pain
Vaginal discharge which is foul-smelled and yellowish in color
Bleeding between periods and after intercourse
Low-grade fever
Painful intercourse
Burning sensation while urination
Swelling in the vaginal area
Penile discharge in men
Testicle pain and swelling
DIAGNOSIS –
Diagnosis is usually recommended to –
Women of age 20 and above
Pregnant women
High-risk males and females after intercourse
Tests include –
CDC Screening test
Urine test
Swab to get a sample from the vagina for testing.
TREATMENT –
Antibiotics and other Medications It gets cured within one to two weeks after treatment. Although, there can be a difficulty in getting pregnant if this disease is left untreated.
PREVENTION –
Abstain from intercourse while on medication
Use latex condoms
Dental dam while having oral sex
Regular screening
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
More prevalent in women than men.
Generally affects the people between the age group of 15 – 24 years.
