Genital Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by herpes simplex virus. It is a long term condition in which the virus affects external genetalia, anal region, mucosal surfaces and skin problems. It is a contagious disease.
CAUSES –
Unprotected sexual contact
Oral sex with a person already having oral sores
HSV-1- It can cause cold sores around mouth
HSV-2- This type of virus spread through sexual contact and it is highly contagious
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
Pain or itching in the genital area
Ulcers
Small red bumps
Vaginal Discharge
Pain while urinating
Malaise
Sores may get developed in various genital parts of men as well as women
COMPLICATION –
Neonatal Herpes – Infant is exposed to HSV present in the genital tract during delivery

DIAGNOSIS –
Viral culture
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Test – The DNAs copy is used to check the presence and type of HSV
Blood Test
TREATMENT –
Medication – No specific drugs can cure herpes virus but to prevent the virus from multiplying antiviral are prescribed
Painkillers
Applying petroleum jelly to the affected areas
PREVENTION –
Avoid tight fitting clothes around affected areas
Wash hands after touching the affected areas
Avoid sexual activity when infected
Use of condoms during sexual intercourse
RISK FACTORS –
Multiple sexual partners
Unprotected intercourse
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
According to WHO, 67% of the population gets infected with HSV-1 infection.
Genital HSV-1 infection has been estimated the most in America, Europe and Western Pacific regions.
Females are more prone to get infected in comparison to males.
