Varicose veins
Varicose veins are the veins that are twisted and enlarged. It usually affects the lower part of the body i.e. the veins in the legs as walking and standing raises the pressure on the lower body. It is also known as spider veins. Some cases may have a mild variation and do not need any treatment whereas some cases needs to be treated quickly as it turns severe.
CAUSES –
- Weak or damaged valves
- Hereditary factors
- Increasing weight
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Twisted, swollen and protruding veins
- Severe pain in the affected area
- Dark purple or bluish colored veins
- Muscle cramps and swelling
- Itching in the veins
COMPLICATIONS –
- Skin rupture and bleeding
- Painful ulcers
- Blood clots
DIAGNOSIS –
- Physical examination
- Imaging test like Ultrasound
TREATMENT –
- Compression stockings
- Endoscopic vein surgery
- Sclerotherapy
- Laser treatment
- High ligation and vein stripping
RISK FACTORS –
- Ageing
- Obesity
- Sitting or standing in same position for long hours
- Prenatal period
- Family history
PREVENTION –
- Exercise regularly
- Maintain weight
- High fiber and low salt diet
- Avoid high heels
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- The statistics shows that 10% males and 30% females suffers from this condition worldwide.
- Females are majorly affected with varicose veins in comparison to males.
