Glimepiride is classified under the drug category ‘sulfonylureas’. It is an anti-diabetic drug that is used to improve the condition of blood sugar control in patients that suffer from type 2 diabetes mellitus. As an oral diabetes drug, Glimepiride is generally accompanied by appropriate diet and exercise plans.
DOSAGE –

- Glimepiride is to be taken as directed by the doctors. Consume this drug only as prescribed to avoid overdose or other harmful effects.
- This drug is taken once a day with the main meal of the day with a full glass of water.
- General Adult Dosage available:
Initial dose – 1mg, 2mg once per day
- Maintenance dose increases by 1-2mg per day

PRECAUTIONS –
- Provide the doctor with a detailed and accurate medical history prior to drug prescription. Notify especially in case of illnesses and conditions such as heart conditions, liver/kidney disease, or a G6PD deficiency.
- Do not use this drug in case of an allergy to Glimepiride itself, in case of an allergy to sulfa drugs or in case of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Inform the doctor of all the drugs being consumed so as to avoid severe drug interactions.
- This drug can harm a baby in case of nursing period or pregnancy. Consult a doctor as to the use of this drug during feeding and gestation. This drug can often cause hypoglycemia in case of such conditions. It is advised to stop consuming this drug for at least 2 weeks prior to due date of delivery.
- Avoid alcohol while on drug course.
- Avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Wear protective clothing and sunscreen while on drug course.
- Cooperate with diet and exercise plans that accompany Glimepiride for effective results.
WARNINGS –
- Keep out of reach of children. Glimepiride is not approved for anyone under the age of 18.
- In case of severe hypoglycemia, use a glucagon kit or consume a fast-acting source of sugar for re-energization.
- This drug can increase risk of serious heart conditions; consult a doctor regarding risks of consuming this drug.
- In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately. Overdose can cause severe hypoglycemia.
