Ibandronate is used for treating some types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in the body. It belongs to the class of drugs commonly called as bisphosphonates. Due to Osteoporosis, the bones become weak and are at the risk of breaking easily. The risk increases at the age of menopause or due to consumption of corticosteroid medicines for a very long time. The drug works in the body by slowing down bone loss resulting in stronger bones and less fractures.
DOSAGE–
- Ibandronate has to be taken as directed by the doctors.
- Adult and pediatric dosages: Injection solution: 3 mg/3 ml Oral Tablet: 2.5 mg; 150 mg

- Bladder pain

PRECAUTIONS–
- This drug contains inactive ingredients which may result in allergic reactions. So a pharmacist must be consulted before consuming it.
- It is necessary to discuss any medical history related to low blood calcium levels, painful swallowing, stomach disorders, esophagus problems, and kidney diseases.
- Consult the doctor in case muscle spasms or severe joint pain arises on using the drug.
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION WITH IBANDRONATE:
- Use of Ibandronate in pregnancy may be acceptable only if the benefits exceed the risks involved.
- Studies in animal pregnancy have shown adverse effects on fetus. But no adequate studies have been found in humans to access the damage involved.
- It is not known if Ibandronate transfers into breast milk. Preferable precautions must be taken during breast feeding.
WARNINGS–
- Use of this medicine gives rise to the risk of severe jawbone problems. So, regular dental check-ups are recommended.
- Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
