Generic Name : DOCUSATE SODIUM

ABSTRACT –

Docusate drug is a stool softener, used to treat the patients who are suffering from constipation. The medication eases the bowel movements and helps to soften the stools. It helps to reduce the rectal damage caused by the harder stools and helps bowel movements. Dosage of the drug works by increasing the absorption of water by stools in the gut which makes the passing easier.

DOSAGE –

  • Docusate has to be taken as directed by the doctors.
  • Adult Dosages:
  • Oral: 50 to 400 mg

    Rectal- 200 to 283 mg

    Solution- 50 to 100 mg

  • Pediatric dosages:
  • Oral: 10 to 60 mg

SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Cramps
  • Irritated throat
  • Problem in talking
  • Swelling in mouth, lips or tongue
  • Pounding heartbeats
  • Light-headed feeling
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Rashes around rectum

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Rashes
  • Itching
  • Blistered and flaky skin
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Troubled in breathing

DRUG INTERACTIONS –

Docusate has no major interactions. There are moderate interactions with 4 drugs:

  • Lactulose
  • Linaclotide
  • Mineral oil
  • Phenolphthalein

PRECAUTIONS –

  • The dose should be decreased if the patients starts developing the symptoms of diarrhea.
  • Unless the doctor recommends, the drug should not be consumed for more than 7 days.
  • Use of other laxatives should be avoided while using this medicine.
  • The drug should not be prescribed if a person goes through vomiting and chronic stomach ache.
  • It is important to note that the mineral water should not be used with the medicine.

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION WITH DOCUSATE:

  • Use of Docusate in pregnancy has not been accepted by FDA. Consultation from doctor is required before breast-feeding.
  • No studies proved that Docusate transfers into breast milk but breast feeding women suffered from diarrhea during the course.

WARNINGS –

  • Electrolyte disorder can be a result of excessive consumption which should be avoided.
  • Irritation might occur around the rectal area so the doctor should be immediately consulted.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
