ABSTRACT –
Empagliflozin is a medication drug that is generally used to control blood sugar levels in patients that are suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus. Apart from being a drug that expels excess glucose via the kidneys and the bloodstream, Empagliflozin is a prescription drug that is used to lower risks of strokes or heart conditions such as an attack/heart failure in patients that suffer from diabetic conditions as well as heart conditions. This drug is classified as an SGLT-2 Inhibitor.
DOSAGE –
-
- Empagliflozin is to be taken as directed by the doctors.
- This drug is to be consumed orally with or without food.
- Cooperate with exercise and diet plans that accompany the consumption of this drug.
- General Adult Dosage available:
Oral – 10mg orally once a day (initial dose)
Upto 25mg orally once a day (maintenance dose)

- Difficulties in urinating
- Dehydration
- High acidity levels within the blood
- Severe nausea and vomiting
- Severe bladder infection

Empagliflozin has moderate interactions with 325 different drugs.
PRECAUTIONS –
- Provide the doctor with a detailed and accurate medical history prior to drug prescription. Notify especially in case of illnesses such as liver/kidney disease, bladder infections, hypotension, heart conditions, pancreatic trouble, alcoholism or subscription to low salt diet.
- Do not consume this drug in case of an allergy to Empagliflozin itself or in case of any severe kidney disease.
- This drug can cause rapid dehydration; remember to always remain hydrated while on drug course so as to not feel weak or dizzy.
- Drug dosage may vary according to the trimester while pregnant. Follow doctor’s prescriptions strictly during pregnancy.
- Inform doctor about drugs being consumed, especially insulin or diuretics.
- Avoid getting up from a lying-down position too quickly to avoid dizzy episodes.
- Do not nurse while on drug course.
- Follow a diet and exercise plan provided to you by the doctor while on drug course.
- Notify a surgeon about the drug intake in case of any upcoming surgery.
WARNINGS –
- Keep out of reach of children. This drug is not approved for anyone under the age of 18.
- This drug cannot be used to treat type-1 diabetic conditions.
- This drug may cause severe infections within the genital organs. Contact the doctor immediately in case of pain or irritation in the genital area.
- Use glucagon emergency injection kit to treat the patient in case of sudden hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia happens to individuals that suffer from regular diabetic conditions. Always keep blood sugar in check while diabetic.
- In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
