Generic Name : FUROSEMIDE

ABSTRACT –

This drug is commonly known as diuretic which works like a water pill. It is used to prevent the body from absorbing excessive salt by letting it pass through urine. Further, it helps the body to get rid of extra water by increasing the amount of urine excretion. By doing this, it reduces the risk of heart strokes, kidney problems, high blood pressure, and breathing problems. This drug is consumed through injection who are under critical medical conditions.

DOSAGE –

  • Furosemide has to be taken as directed by the doctors
  • Adult and pediatric dosages:
    Injection solution: 40 mg/5mL; 100 mg/10 ml
    Tablet: 20 mg; 40 mg; 80 mg

Furosemide has moderate interactions with 383 different drugs.

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Avoid taking this medicine if you face problems during urination.
  • This drug should not be taken in high doses as it may result in hearing loss
  • This drug contains inactive ingredients which may result in allergic reactions. So a pharmacist must be consulted before consuming it.
  • It is necessary to discuss any medical history related to kidney disease, problems in urination, enlarged prostate, high cholesterol, diabetes, and liver disease with doctor
  • Discuss with the doctor in case of any MRI or radioactive dye scan done.

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION WITH FUROSEMIDE:

  • Use of Furosemide in pregnancy can only be acceptable if the benefits exceed the risks involved
  • Studies in animal pregnancy have shown adverse effects on fetus. But no adequate studies has been found in humans to access the damage involved.
  • Furosemide transfers into breast milk and therefore affects milk production. Preferable precautions must be taken during breast feeding.

WARNINGS –

  • Do not use this drug in infants as it has adverse effects on them like kidney stones
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately
