Generic Name :ALUMINIUM HYDROX-MAGNESIUM CARBONATE SUSPENSION

 

ABSTRACT –

Gavicson is used to treat problems related to stomach like acidity, heartburn, abdominal pain or indigestion. Aluminum and magnesium antacids in the drug works by reducing the acids in the stomach. This medication only helps to treat the existing acids but does not stop acid production. It is also used with other medications that serve similar purpose of lowering acid production like H2 blockers, ranitidine.

DOSAGE –

  • Gaviscon has to be taken as directed by the doctors
  • Adult and pediatric dosages:
    Oral Suspension -15 to 30 ml, 4 times a day
    Tablet: 105 mg – 160 mg; 2 to 4 tablets, 4 times a day

  • Rashes and itching
  • Swollen skin
  • Wheezing
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unusual tiredness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Black / tarry stools

Gaviscon has moderate interactions with 126 different drugs

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Avoid using the drug in case of allergy with aluminum hydroxide or magnesium. This drug contains inactive ingredients which may result in allergic reactions
  • It is necessary to discuss any medical history related to severe dehydration, kidney stones
  • The medication contains aspartame. Avoid taking the drug in conditions like phenylketonuria which restricts aspartame intake

PREGNANCY AND LACTATION WITH GAVISCON:

  • Use of Gaviscon in pregnancy may be acceptable only if the benefits exceed the risks involved.
  • Studies in animal pregnancy have shown adverse effects on fetus. But no adequate studies have been found in humans to access the damage involved.
  • Gaviscon may transfer into breast milk. Preferable precautions must be taken during breast feeding

WARNINGS –

  • Do not abruptly stop or start taking the medication without doctor’s consultation
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
