KERATITIS

ABSTRACT –

Keratitis is an inflammation of cornea which is the outermost layer of the eye that protects it from dirt, germs or any damage. It occurs because of any injury, foreign body or infection in the cornea that causes an inflammation in it. This condition is very painful and makes the vision difficult.

CAUSES –

  • Injury in Cornea
  • Contaminated contact lenses
  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
  • Bacterial infections
  • Exposure of contaminated water to eyes
  • Drying out of eyes

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –

  • Excessive watery eyes
  • Blurred or reduction in vision
  • Photophobia
  • Feeling of a foreign body in the eye everytime

COMPLICATIONS –

  • Chronic corneal inflammation, infection or scarring
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Temporary or permanent vision problems
  • Glaucoma
  • Blindness

DIAGNOSIS –

  • Physical examination of eye
  • Penlight examination
  • Slit-lamp examination
  • Scraping of sample for lab test

TREATMENT –

  • Antibacterial or antifungal eye drops
  • Oral medications and Antibiotics
  • Surgery in severe cases

RISK FACTORS –

  • Wearing contact lenses
  • Use of corticosteroids
  • Other eye diseases or injury in eyes

PREVENTIONS –

  • Clean contact lenses regularly and use them carefully
  • Routine eye checkup
  • Wear sunglasses before going into sunlight
  • Eat vitamin A rich food
  • Avoid touching and rubbing eyes frequently

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • Annual incidence of keratitis is 2 to 11 per 1, 00,000 people globally.
  • Study has shown that lens-wearers are more prone to get this infection than non-lens wearers.
