KNEE PAIN

ABSTRACT –

Knee pain is a very common problem that affects the bones of the knee joints, kneecaps, ligaments, tendons, cartilage of the knee which can happen to the people of any age. Besides, there are numerous home remedies for curing knee pain if it’s not very severe. Minor knee pain can be cured with several OTC medications and creams whereas if the pain is severe it may require a surgery. Most of the times, knee pain is often raised due to various physical activities a person do in day-to-day life.

CAUSES –

  • ACL Injury – Tearing of Anterior Cruciate Ligament {one of the four ligaments that connects the shinbone to the thighbone.
  • Fractures in the bones of the knee
  • Tear in Meniscus which is a rubbery tough cartilage act as a shock absorber
  • Dislocation of kneecap and knee injuries
  • Pain in hips or feet
  • Pre-existing conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis or infections

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –

  • Swelling and redness in knee which usually leads to fever
  • Cracking or crunching sound in the knee
  • Difficulty in stretching and bending the legs
  • Pain while walking results in limping i.e. more pressure on one leg than other
  • Trouble in lifting weight due to unstable knee

COMPLICATIONS

  • Osteoarthritis – Type of a major knee problem leads to long term knee pain.
  • Increased difficulty in walking for lifetime

DIAGNOSIS –

  • Examination of the knee by:
    1. Bending and straightening the knee
    2. Inspection of redness and swelling by touching
  • Tests for further analysis:
    1. Blood test
    2. Imaging tests like MRI, CT Scan, Ultrasound
    3. Radiologic test such as X-ray

TREATMENT –

  • Medication for relieving pain such as OTC medication (for minor knee pain) and prescribed medications such as pain relievers
  • Therapy – Physical exercises
  • Pain relieving injections like Corticosteroids, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • Surgery (in severe knee issues)

RISK FACTORS –

  • Obesity
  • Frequent usage of knee joint and changes in the movement
  • Day to day occupation/ sports which require the maximum use of knee
  • Muscle and joint weakness
  • Earlier injuries in knee

PREVENTIONS –

  • Maintain weight
  • Proper diet for strong muscles and bone
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain flexibility in the body

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • It had been found that 10 to 15% of the people aged over 60 suffers from the knee disorder, Osteoarthritis (Chronic knee disorder which is a common type of Arthritis).
  • Also, it is estimated that females are more prone to get affected than males.
  • It has been forecasted that by 2050,130 million people are expected to get affected from Osteoarthritis worldwide.
