ABSTRACT –

Kyphosis is an abnormal curving and excessive rounding of back and spinal bones which affects the overall body.

Types:
  • Postural Kyphosis
  • Scheuermann’s Kyphosis
  • Congenital Kyphosis

CAUSES –

  • Pre-existing Scheuermann’s Disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Birth defects
  • Disk degeneration
  • Cancer and cancer treatments
  • Syndromes like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Marfan syndrome
  • Spine fractures and abnormalities
  • Poor sitting posture and weakness

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –

  • Back pain
  • Stiffness and uneasiness
  • Cramps
  • Weakness

COMPLICATIONS –

  • Breathing problems
  • Poor body position
  • Digestion related issues
  • Difficulty in doing physical activities
  • Unresponsive arms and legs

DIAGNOSIS –

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • X-Ray or CT Scan
  • Bone Density Tests
  • Nerve Tests

TREATMENT –

  • Pain relief and Osteoporosis medications
  • Regular exercise
  • Bracing: Wearing body support in the case of children for better growing of spinal bones

RISK FACTORS –

  • Poor posture
  • Improper growth and development issues in spinal cord
  • Ageing
  • Abnormal vertebrae shape

PREVENTIONS –

  • Avoid slouching or sitting in a drooping way
  • Use orthopaedic equipment while sitting on a desk or working on computer
  • Use backpacks for support

EPIDEMIOLOGY –

  • It can happen at any age but old-age people between 50 to 59 years are majorly affected and their prevalence is around 20-40% worldwide
  • The rate of kyphosis is around 12% in girls and 15.3% in boys globally.
