ABSTRACT –
Kyphosis is an abnormal curving and excessive rounding of back and spinal bones which affects the overall body.
Types:- Postural Kyphosis
- Scheuermann’s Kyphosis
- Congenital Kyphosis
CAUSES –
- Pre-existing Scheuermann’s Disease
- Osteoporosis
- Birth defects
- Disk degeneration
- Cancer and cancer treatments
- Syndromes like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Marfan syndrome
- Spine fractures and abnormalities
- Poor sitting posture and weakness
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Back pain
- Stiffness and uneasiness
- Cramps
- Weakness
COMPLICATIONS –
- Breathing problems
- Poor body position
- Digestion related issues
- Difficulty in doing physical activities
- Unresponsive arms and legs
DIAGNOSIS –
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
- X-Ray or CT Scan
- Bone Density Tests
- Nerve Tests
TREATMENT –
- Pain relief and Osteoporosis medications
- Regular exercise
- Bracing: Wearing body support in the case of children for better growing of spinal bones
RISK FACTORS –
- Poor posture
- Improper growth and development issues in spinal cord
- Ageing
- Abnormal vertebrae shape
PREVENTIONS –
- Avoid slouching or sitting in a drooping way
- Use orthopaedic equipment while sitting on a desk or working on computer
- Use backpacks for support
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- It can happen at any age but old-age people between 50 to 59 years are majorly affected and their prevalence is around 20-40% worldwide
- The rate of kyphosis is around 12% in girls and 15.3% in boys globally.
