ABSTRACT –
Peyronie’s (pay-roe-Neez) disease is a condition in which the penis bends abnormally during erection. It is also known as curvature of penis. It happens because of the development of fibrous scar tissues under the penis’s skin. Curving of the men’s penis is normal but when it causes pain or has a severe bend then it needs attention. Peyronie’s disease hampers the man’s ability to have a healthy and successful sexual intercourse and also can result into Erectile Dysfunction.
CAUSES –
- Scar tissues (plaque) development in penis
- Damage to small blood vessels during intercourse
- Previous penis injuries
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Severe pain in penis
- Bending of penis
- Scar tissues (plaque) can be seen
- Shortening length of penis
- Painful erection
COMPLICATIONS –
- Inability of successful intercourse
- Erectile dysfunction
- Disability to fathering a child
- Depression and anxiety
- Problems in the relationship with sexual partner
DIAGNOSIS –
- Physical examination
- Imaging Test like Ultrasound
TREATMENT –
This condition usually doesn’t require treatment in initial stages but when it becomes severe, it needs quick and proper action before it becomes worse.
- Prescribed medications for destroying scar tissues and relieving pain
- Surgery
- Penile Injections
- Iontopheresis – Medication is provided using electric current through the skin
- Shock Wave Therapy – To destroy scar tissues
- Penile Traction Therapy – To help in stretching penis

RISK FACTORS –
- Hereditary factors
- Issues with connective tissues

PREVENTION
- Quit smoking and avoid alcohol consumption
- Exercise regularly
- Proper treatment for penis injuries
- Take good care during intercourse
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- The estimation shows that males aged from 40-70 years are majorly prone to get affected from Peyronie’s disease worldwide.
