ABSTRACT –
Stomach cancer also known as gastric cancer, occurs when the cancerous cells gets formed in the inner lining of the stomach. These cells turn into tumor and make the condition severe over the period. The major kind of the stomach cancer is adenocarcinoma wherein cancer develops in the mucus producing cells that covers the lining of stomach. This disease is difficult to detect in the beginning hence the diagnosis gets delayed.
CAUSES –
- DNA Mutation
- Pre-existing Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Smoking
- Obesity
- Highly smoked and salt-rich food
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Severe stomach pain
- Fatigue
- Continuous vomits
- Unexplained weight loss
- Severe heartburn
- Loss of appetite and severe bloating after eating
- Indigestion
DIAGNOSIS –
- Endoscopy
- Imaging tests like CT Scan and X-Ray
TREATMENT –
- Antibiotics
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Immunotherapy
- Surgery in severe cases
RISK FACTORS –
- Genetics and family history
- Pre-existing stomach inflammation
- Absences of fruits, vegetables and fiber in the diet
- Food with high amount of salt
- Excessive smoking
PREVENTION –
- Exercise regularly
- Quit smoking
- Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables in the diet
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- As per WHO report, around 7, 23,000 people gets affected and die worldwide because of this cancer.
- It’s the 5th most common cancer on a global level and the 3rd major cause of cancer related deaths.
