ABSTRACT –
Tinnitus is a situation where people feel a sensation of a noise or ringing in the ears. Tinnitus is not a condition, it is rather a symptom of problems arising in the ear such as hearing loss, ear injury and circulatory system disorder. Tinnitus is not a serious condition but it can get worsen with age if it is left untreated. Treatment of tinnitus also includes the identification and treatment of other underlying conditions.
Types-
- Subjective Tinnitus – Only a patient can hear
- Objective Tinnitus – Doctors can also hear along with the patient during physical examination
CAUSES –
- Ageing
- Exposure to noise polluted environment
- Earwax accumulation
- Abnormal ear bone growth
- Head or neck injury
- High blood pressure
- Muscle contractions in the ears
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
Noises in ear such as:
- Vibrating
- Roaring
- Clicking
- Hissing
- Ringing
- Whining
COMPLICATIONS –
- Diffulty in sleeping
- Depression
- Anxiety and Irritation
- Stress
- Weakness
- Concentration problems
DIAGNOSIS –
- Audiological examination
- Physical examination
- Imaging tests like CT Scan, MRI
TREATMENT –
- Excessive earwax removal
- Prescribed medications for noise suppression
- Treatment of underlying conditions
RISK FACTORS –
- Noise pollution in surrounding
- Smoking abuse
- Cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure, narrowed arteries
PREVENTION –
- Avoid noise polluted area
- Listen music with low volume
- Maintain cardiovascular health
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- Estimation shows that the condition has a prevalence rate of 360 million people worldwide.n
- Studies report that hearing loss due to different ear conditions is the 2nd most prevalent health issue at global level.
