Vitamin B1 Deficiency

Vitamin B1, one of the many Vitamin B complex, commonly known as Thiamine, is essential in using carbohydrates as energy, glucose metabolism and plays key roles in nerve, muscle and heart functions. Deficiency causes beriberi, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, Leigh’s disease, etc. Deficiency can be overcome by using medicines prescribed by doctors and food rich in vitamin B1 like cereals, beef, pork, whole grains, pulses, eggs, legumes etc. Thiamine is used as medication for B1 deficiency and also in treating maple syrup urine disease. Adverse effect of using Thiamine as medication is anaphylaxis. Having B1 rich food helps in avoiding that.
