Vitamin C: A Boon to Sailors

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water soluble vitamin, essential in collagen synthesis, tissue repairing, production of some neurotransmitters, enzymes and immune system functions and also a powerful antioxidant. Deficiency causes brown spots in body, malaise, joint pain, bleeding gums, partial immobilization, teeth loss and if untreated, causes Scurvy, which can lead to death. Deficiency can be treated by doctor prescribed medicines and having food rich in vitamin C like citrus fruits (lemon, orange), kiwifruit, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes etc. It can also limit the formation of carcinogens, reduce risk of cardiovascular diseases etc.
