Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, essential in increasing calcium, magnesium and phosphate absorption. It’s also important in calcium homeostasis and metabolism found as two compounds: ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). Deficiency causes rickets or osteomalacia (softening of the bones) which can lead to other diseases like osteoporosis. Deficiency can be treated by doctor prescribed medicines and having vitamin D supplements. Main source of Vitamin D is sunlight, especially the Ultraviolet B radiation. Sources of Vitamin D are mostly non vegetarian like fish, eggs, cheese etc. Vegetarians should take pharmaceutically made supplements to avoid deficiency.
