Generic Name : INSULIN GLARGINE

ABSTRACT –

Basaglar is an insulin injection that works evenly over 24 hours against Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes in adults. It works several hours after being introduced into the body and is used to control the blood sugar levels in patients who suffer from diabetes. It is also used to treat Type 1 Diabetes in children as well as patients with Diabetes Mellitus. It is generally found in the syringe form.

DOSAGE –

  • This drug is to be used as prescribed by a doctor
  • It is to be used differently as per diabetic condition. General dosage is to be taken subcutaneously once a day, at the same time, every day.
  • It is regulated as per metabolism and glycemic condition. Intensity of dosage may differ accordingly; consult a doctor regularly while on course with this insulin.
  • General dosage –
  • Syringe (or Kwikpen) – 300units/mL, 100units/mL

SIDE EFFECTS –

  • Low blood sugar
  • Itching or mild rashes
  • Hollowing of skin at injection site
  • Blurry vision
  • Grogginess
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Rapid palpitations

RARE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Severe skin rash or itching

  • Sweating abnormally

Basaglar has major interactions with at least 20 different drugs.

  • Acebutolol
  • Acetazolamide
  • Albuterol
  • Alogliptin
  • Amprenavir
  • Asenapine
  • Aspirin
  • Iloperidone
  • Irbesartan
  • Isocarboxazid
  • Labetalol
  • Levothyroxine
  • Losartan
  • Mazindol
Basaglar has moderate interactions with at least 760 different drugs.

PRECAUTIONS –

  • Forms of Basaglar may be different in dosage and intensity for both adults and children. Follow prescription rules closely for administering.
  • Do not share a Kwikpen or syringe with another patient, regardless of whether or not the needle is different.
  • Avoid using Basaglar in case of hypoglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • It is very important to keep blood sugar levels in check while on a Basaglar course.
  • Provide a medical authority with patient’s detailed and accurate medical history before drug prescription. Let the doctor know in case the patient has a liver or kidney disease, low levels of potassium in the blood, diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while on course with Basaglar.
  • Notify the doctor in case patient is consuming drugs such as pioglitazone, rosiglitazone or other diabetes medication.
  • Follow doctor’s instructions clearly while on course during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

WARNINGS –

  • Do not administer Basaglar at a vein or muscle.
  • Basaglar is not recommended for children below the age of 6.
  • Basaglar is not recommended for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in children of any age.
  • Do not administer Basaglar via an insulin pump.
  • Do not mix Basaglar with other insulin.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately. Symptoms of overdose may involve lethal hypoglycemia – numbness, dizziness, slurry speech, muscle weakness or tingling.
