ABSTRACT –
Stuttering also known as stammering or diffluent speech is a speech disorder which disrupts the normal fluency or flow of speech. The sounds, syllables, words or a consonant are repeated or prolonged which make it difficult to communicate with other people.
CAUSES –
- Hereditary factors
- Emotional trauma and distress
- Feeling nervous or pressurized on certain situations
- Stroke
- Traumatic brain injury
- Other brain disorders
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS –
- Difficulty to start a word, phrase or sentence while speaking
- Extend a word or sounds for long time
- Repeating the same sound, syllable or word
- Takes pauses and anxious while talking
- Changes in body language
- Can’t communicate efficiently
- Constant eye blinking
- Tremors in the lips or jaw
- Facial tics
- Head jerks
- Clenching fists
DIAGNOSIS –
- Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)
TREATMENT –
- Speech therapy
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Electronic devices which can help to enhance the speech fluency.
- Interaction with family members
EPIDEMIOLOGY –
- As per the research, the prevalence rate has shown 0.72% were affected by Stuttering among the total population out of which highest prevalence was found in children and lowest among adolescents.
